Cauvery brings together parties

January 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - CHENNAI:

A number of political parties on Wednesday put up a united face in extending support to farmers of the Cauvery Delta region, who organised a protest against proposed construction of two dams across the river in Karnataka and the methane gas project in the delta.

The meeting at Chepauk saw VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan, DMK organising secretary T.K.S. Elangovan, Tamil Manila Congress leader S.R. Balasubramaniam and DMDK MLA Arul Selvan raise slogans together and backing the demands of the ryots. A common petition to the Centre was also signed by the leaders. However, sources in the DMK said the event should not be seen as a precursor to an electoral alliance among parties who were represented at the agitation. “But we hope these parties would coordinate further in the coming months,” a DMK leader said.
