In a daring burglary at a pawn shop and an adjoining medical store on L.B. Road in Thiruvanmiyur on Monday, men escaped with gold jewellery weighing over 90 sovereigns, Rs. 2.5 lakh and expensive medicines.
The shops are located 500 metres from the Adyar police station and near a junction where police teams conduct routine vehicle checks. They are owned by C. Chandraprakash who has been residing with his family behind the shops for over three decades. Chandraprakash had closed the shops after business on Sunday evening.
According to the police, early on Monday morning, the owner’s son Vishal noticed the shutter of the ayurvedic medical shop was damaged and the locks broken. He then alerted his father. The two men inspected the shops, realised they had been burgled and alerted the police.
A team from the Thiruvanmiyur police station carried out a preliminary probe.
“The burglars had broken the shutter lock and entered the medical store. They had easy access to the pawn shop through a connecting doorway. The culprits seem to have studied the spot earlier,” said an investigating officer.
Gold jewellery weighing 92 sovereigns, which had been on display, and Rs. 2.5 lakh kept in a cashbox were stolen by the burglars who are suspected to have also taken expensive medicines including ayurvedic powders, police sources said.
