Cash, narcotics seized from passengers

The Railway police on Wednesday seized Rs. 49 lakh and arrested a 35-year-old man.

R. Purushothaman, inspector, Government Railway Police, Chennai Central, said they had detained Mohammed Faizal on suspicion and on checking his baggage, found the cash. He was unable to produce any record or even a bill for the cash.

They then handed over the cash and Faizal to officers of the income tax department. He is suspected to be a courier in a hawala transaction and was on his way to Malapuram in Kerala.

Policemen also seized 16 kilograms of ganja from a 45-year-old woman who arrived from Andhra Pradesh. The woman, from Theni district, is reported to have got the substance in Vijayawada. She told the police the narcotic was meant for workers engaged in hard labour in her hometown.
