Six out of every 10 persons are aware of various aspects of cancer that include symptoms, treatment and types of cancer. If that seems to be positive news for one to fight the disease, there are other findings that health officials and researchers should be happy about.
Pollachi has the maximum percentage (75) of people who were aware of cancer, while Tiruchi recorded the lowest (50). These were some of the findings collated by 21 NCC cadets of D.G. Vaishnav College, who went on a motorcycle expedition to various districts to highlight the effects of cancer. The results of the cancer awareness survey report were released by Mayor Saidai Duraisamy here on Wednesday.
The survey team, headed by S.Santhosh Baboo, Armd Sqnn NCC of the college, covered a total of 3,160 km and surveyed over 8,500 people in 22 districts of the State.
Addressing the gathering, V.Shantha, chairperson of Cancer Institute, said early detection can cure most types of cancer. “Tobacco consumption is the cause of cancer in 40 per cent of men. You can reduce it to 10 per cent, and that's where we need the youth,” she said. “Do not get into tobacco habit, don't get cancer.”
Principal of the college S. Narasimhan, secretary P. Haridas, Group Commander of Madras Group A NCC Sunil Sharma, Regional Manager (TN & Pondy), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. Mahendra Shetty and Managing Director, Prashanth Multispecialty Hospitals, G. Gopalaswamy spoke.
