Residents of Avadi were witness to the slow and painful death of a calf which fell into a drain, on Wednesday.

The animal could have been saved had help arrived in time, a resident said.

“The animal was stuck in a drain on Avadi-Poonamallee Road. I tried to rescue it but was unable to. When I contacted volunteers of Blue Cross around 11.45 a.m., they said a rescue team would arrive shortly but nobody came. Around 4.30 p.m., minutes after the animal died, the driver of the ambulance called to ask if assistance was required,” said Paul Justus, a resident.

Some butchers tried to carry the carcass away, residents said. “We tried to trace the owner of the animal but were unable to find him. We did not allow the butchers to take the carcass away, however,” said R. Rajesh, another resident.

A volunteer of Blue Cross said they could not make it in time to save the calf as they were busy attending to other injured animals. “We save at least 50 animals every day,” the volunteer said.
