March 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - CHENNAI:

He stole only Tata Indicas parked in front of houses which enable him to enrol in various cab services across the city. His success ran out during a trip on Thursday. Avadi police nabbed 27-year-old Ashok Raman of Muthuraman Nagar in Kolathur, who lifted Indicas from Avadi, Puzhal, Tiruvottiyur, Pallikaranai and adjoining areas.

“Ashok gave up his work as a mechanic few months ago and started roaming in the night to locate the hatchbacks. He fled with cars using duplicate keys, changed the registration plates and for some he altered the engine numbers as well,” said an investigating officer.

Police team from Avadi laid a trap after obtaining his mobile number by calling for his cab for a trip from Porur. The cops nabbed Ashok when he drove in with a stolen Indica.

Questioning him revealed that once bored of the vehicle, he would sell the stolen car to lift the next only to use for his work, sources added.
