A passenger in the victim’s car, who was also attacked, has been admitted to a hospital

A gang in a car intercepted a cab driver driving in Senneerkuppam near Poonamallee on Monday night, and hacked him to death following a 100 metre chase.

A panic-stricken passenger in the victim’s car, who was also attacked, has been admitted to a hospital and his condition is stable. A previous enmity is suspected to be the reason behind the murder.

Thiruverkadu police identified the cab diver as Aravindan (30), a resident of Ayyappan Nagar, Ayyappanthangal who drives his own cab by enlisting the vehicle with a well-known cab service in the city.

Around 9.30 p.m. on Monday, Aravindan picked up his client, Govindaraj (39), a realtor from Ponneri, and was to drop him at a location in Senneerkuppam. “Aravindan’s cab was followed by another car about midway through the drive. When the cab reached Senneerkuppam, the other vehicle intercepted the cab and four men armed with knives and sickles got out. They attacked Govindaraj inflicting minor injuries on him, and then went after Aravindan,” said an investigating officer.

The gang chased Aravindan and hacked him to death nearby and then fled the spot in the car they had come, the officer added.

Govindaraj has been admitted to a private hospital on Greams Road and is undergoing treatment.

Thiruverkadu police have registered a case of murder and are in the process of identifying the members of the gang.
