Two persons diverted the attention of a businessman and relieved him of Rs.4 lakh in cash at Adyar here on Thursday.

According to police sources, Chandrasekaran (50) of Thoraipakkam went to a nationalised bank on Sardar Patel Road on Thursday morning and withdrew Rs.4 lakh. When he came out with the money wrapped in a plastic bag, two persons posing as pedestrians alerted him that his car had a flat tyre.

As Chandrasekaran was trying to check, one of the suspects snatched his bag containing the cash and hopped on to a motorcycle in which his accomplice was waiting. Even as the victim raised an alarm, the accused persons escaped from the scene. Police suspect that the accused might have seen Chandrasekaran withdrawing the money in the bank.

Joint Commissioner of Police (South) K.Periaiah said special teams had been formed to apprehend the suspects. “We are trying to build the portrait of the accused with the help of inputs provided by the complainant. Police are looking at the involvement of some habitual offenders known for their expertise in such cases,” he said.
