Two Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses that tried to negotiate the traffic light near the Anna Statue at the Wallajah Road-Anna Salai junction brought vehicular traffic on the stretch to a standstill on Monday.

The buses, one of which was on route no. 29A going to Anna Square, and the other on route 1A, travelling towards Chennai Central Station, blocked the junction for 10 minutes, leading to a half-km queue of vehicles on the arterial road.

The driver of 29A was trying to turn right into Wallajah Road by overtaking the other bus, which was proceeding towards Pallavan Salai.

All it required was for one of the drivers to give way to the other. But neither was willing to move an inch. Passengers in the buses bore the brunt of this standoff.

The confusion dissipated only after a traffic constable arrived on the scene and cleared the junction for the buses to manoeuvre at the turn.
