Burglars struck at three locations in the city and reportedly fled with over 180 sovereigns of gold jewellery, silver items, other valuables and cash.

In an incident at a house on Parthasarathy Samy Lane, Triplicane, on Monday afternoon, burglars allegedly gained access after removing a portion of a window’s grille, while the residents were out.

“Two almirahs were broken open and nearly 110 sovereigns of gold, silver items weighing three kg and Rs. 15,000 in cash are missing,” said Rajeswari (62), the resident of the house .

The police suspect the burglary was staged, and noted that gaining entry through a small gap in the window would have been difficult. “We are investigating the claims of burglary,” said an officer.

In another case of burglary in Triplicane, suspects entered a locked first-floor house on Pala Muthu Street on Tuesday afternoon, and stole over 30 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs. 20,000 in cash. The break-in took place when the residents had gone out.

The same afternoon, unidentified men broke into a locked flat on P.T. Rajan Road, K.K. Nagar, and stole over 25 sovereigns of jewellery and Rs. 2,500 in cash. On Monday night, burglars attempted to break into the Pallavaram branch of Central Bank of India on Grand Southern Trunk Road in Chromepet.
