Burglars struck at a house in VGP Pushpa Nagar in Medavakkam and fled with gold jewellery weighing 35 sovereigns.
The police said the culprits gained entry by breaking open the front door lock when the residents were not at home.
The burglary took place at the residence of Vinayagam (31), a marketing executive, on Santhanam Street in VGP Pushpa Nagar. Vinayagam left for Goa on Tuesday while his wife Vijayalakshmi and their children went to her mother’s house in Perambur on Friday.
The burglars appeared to have kept a watch on the house and entered after ensuring all the members of Vinayagam’s family had left. On Saturday, they broke open the front door lock and combed the house.
They found the gold jewellery in an almirah and fled with it after ransacking the other rooms.
Vinayagam returned home on Saturday night and found the lock broken and gold missing from the almirah. He alerted the police and a team from the Pallikaranai police station reached the crime scene to carry out preliminary investigations.
Fingerprints experts scanned the house for clues. Further investigation is underway, an officer said.
