The building to house students' therapy centres at the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities will be ready for occupation in three months, said D. Napoleon, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment.
The Minister, who visited the Institute at Muttukadu here on Thursday to inspect the progress of the construction work, said the rest of the buildings, including men's and women's hostel, classrooms, staff quarters and the guest house would be ready by March next year. The women's hostel will accommodate 70 students and men's hostel 50 students.
Two postgraduates will be accommodated in each room while three diploma students would share a room. A total of 12 classrooms for children with various disabilities are coming up on the campus. The existing buildings will be renovated and used as residences for parents of children from other parts of the country and State. Mr. Napoleon said that the project was being executed at a cost of Rs.39 crore. During an interaction with the Minister, parents of children with disability wanted free bus passes for the attendant who travels with the children. Some families had moved from other places to live closer to the institute. They wanted ration cards and housing facilities.
