: The story of Collé, a middle-aged woman, who revolts against the custom of female genital mutilation, a common practice in some countries in Africa, forms the basis of the 2004 film Moolaadé by Ousmane Sembène a Senegalese film director, producer and writer.
As part of a three-day event to honour Sembène, the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation will screen films that revolve around many such cultural practices in Senegal. The line-up also involves three other films by him, Xala , Ceddo and Black Girl , which would be screened between April 20 and 22 at the Russian Cultural Centre, from 6 p.m.
Ashok Thakkar, consul, Republic of Senegal, said, “Senegal is known only for its phosphate exports to India and its victory against France in the 2002 Football World Cup. It is through such initiatives that cultural ties can be established between the two countries, which would lead to strong economic bonds.”
El Hadji Ibou Boye, ambassador, Republic of Senegal, who also spoke, noted that culture and development go hand-in-hand.
A three-day film festival will feature the works of Ousmane Sembène including those about various cultural practices in Senegal
