The British Council has expanded its English language centre by adding two more state-of-the-art classrooms and a young learner zone in Chennai. The centre provides access to English language education, offering communicative language courses for students and professionals that are tailored to the needs of learners. As on date, there are seven classrooms.
Mei-kwei Barker, director, British Council South India, said that since they launched the English Language Centre in 2009, there had been a growing demand from Chennai. “The new classrooms will help us accommodate a more diverse group of learners. Our revamped Young learners’ zone provides access to physical resources and an expanded online collection for our young readers,” she said.
As part of the Young learner’s zone in the library, the online collections for children have been expanded. New additions include Comic Plus, an online graphic novel portal with stories from all around the world and Atomic Learning, an online training portal that opens up unlimited access to thousands of short videos covering more than 500 of today’s most popular software applications.
The British Council also runs a three-week ‘Summer School’ course for young learners between the ages of 8 and 15. Summer school starts from May 2, 2016. The theme for summer 2016 is ‘Shakespeare’. Children will be introduced to a range of Shakespearean plays and will have the opportunity to experiment with drama and theatre.
