The Crime Branch CID is closing in on a suspect who allegedly opened fire, killing 13-year-old Dilson who entered the defence residential complex here on Sunday, police sources said.

Investigators examined half-a-dozen persons, including two Army officials, in connection with the murder case on Tuesday. While the opinion of forensic and ballistic expert is awaited on the nature and make of the bullet seized from the scene of firing, police believe that the shot came from a rifle.

Additional Director-General of Police (CBCID) R. Sekar said police were zeroing in on the suspect. “We are trying to get clinching evidence and do not want to make any speculations at this stage,” he said.

Parrying questions whether the agency had narrowed down on a senior Army official, he said all possible angles would be thoroughly investigated and any conclusion would be made based on indisputable evidence.

Meanwhile, the Army authorities in a statement issued here on Tuesday said all Army personnel in the vicinity (of the firing) and Civilian Security Guard on duty in the compound on Sunday were made available for joint investigation. The General Officer Commanding, Chennai Area, said “no guilty person will be shielded”.

Police sources said investigators suspected the involvement of a person who allegedly left the residential complex soon after the firing. “He was seen rushing out in his car and returning a few minutes later. It is possible that he tried to conceal the weapon or tamper with evidence…we have specific clues on his movement and persons he got in touch with on that day,” a senior police official said.
