A 14-year-old boy who went missing from Aminjikarai on April 8, returned home on Thursday morning. The teenager had run away fearing that his grandmother would scold him when she learnt that he hadn't appeared for his annual school exams recently, and had gone to Marina Beach, finding work at a shop there.
Abey Mon disappeared after he went to church in Aminjikarai on Easter day with his grandmother Leelamma (67), who is a resident of Kolathur.
The woman and her relatives searched everywhere for the boy and finally lodged a complaint with the Aminjikarai police on April 12. His family members had even placed posters about the boy across the city.
Speaking to The Hindu , S. Saravanan, Abey's cousin and an autorickshaw driver, said that he had received a call around 3.30 a.m. on Thursday, and Abey had been on the other end.
“I was overjoyed to hear him say that he would come outside Ampa Skywalk in a little while. I immediately rushed there with some relatives and found him waiting for us,” he added.
Police said, Abey didn't appear for his annual exams held recently, even though he had left home saying that he was going to school. He was scared that his grandmother would find out the truth when the results were out and so he fled to Marina Beach from the church.
After a few days, he found work at a food joint on the beach. The owner of the joint saw Abey's photograph in a regional-language daily and asked the teenager to go back to his family.
Aminjikarai police questioned Abey and he was later reunited with his family.
