Boy suffers stab injury in scuffle, succumbs

A two-year-old who suffered a deep stab injury when his mother tried to intervene in a scuffle at Thoraipakkam here died on Wednesday.

According to the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Thoraipakkam) K.N. Murali, Pakkiammal (50) of Karapakkam, a construction worker, helped one Venkatesh (36) living in the same locality to get a job in the building site where she works. A few days later, he accused the woman of taking Rs. 150 commission from his daily wages and demanded payment of the money.

This led to an altercation between the two and Venkatesh, who was in an inebriated condition, tried to attack Pakkiammal with a knife. Her daughter Banumathi intervened and persuaded Venkatesh to leave. In the melee that followed, Banumathi’s son Vadivel Murugan suffered a stab injury.

The boy was taken to the Government Royapettah Hospital where he died. On the instructions of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Adyar) M.C. Sarangan, a special team formed to investigate the case arrested Venkatesh early on Thursday. The weapon used to commit the murder was recovered, Mr. Murali added.
