A 13-year-old boy came under the wheels of the bus he was travelling in, after he fell on the road while trying to disembark.

According to the Anna Square traffic police, the accident took place around 4.35 p.m. on Thursday when Subash Ajay Babu, a class VIII student of The Muslim Higher Secondary School in Triplicane, was travelling in an MTC bus on route number 12G (Anna Square to Kalaignar Nagar).

Subash and his elder brother, also a student of the same institution, were on their way home to Narayanapuram in Pallikaranai.

“Subash was travelling on the front footboard of the packed bus which was heading towards Ice House. On Dr. Natesan Road–Lloyds Road junction, the boy tried to alight but his backpack got caught in the door. He tried to wriggle out but lost balance and fell on the road, and came under the rear wheels of the bus,” said an investigating officer.

Some motorists, along with Subash’s brother, rushed the boy to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in an autorickshaw, but he succumbed to injuries before reaching the hospital.

A post-mortem was conducted on Friday and the body was handed over to Subash’s relatives by noon.

The driver of the MTC bus, C. Nagarajan (45), a resident of Jafferkhanpet, was arrested, said the traffic police.
