A 15-year-old boy drowned in a ground-level service reservoir in the complex of the Chennai Airport on Sunday evening.
According to police sources, Sundara Vadivel (15), a student of the Government High School in Meenambakkam and son of Murugan, an employee of Chennai Corporation, had gone to the spot along with a group of his friends for a game of hide and seek on Sunday evening.
The boys are reported to have gone too close to the underground sump, a source of water for fire tenders in the airport.
After some time, the boys panicked as they were unable to spot Sundara Vadivel in the vicinity and raised an alarm. Suspecting that he might have slipped and fallen into the underground sump, locals as well as a few employees of the airport informed personnel of the Chennai Airport.
An emergency rescue team rushed to the spot and pulled out the boy from the sump. Sundara Vadivel was rushed to the Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital in Chromepet, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Though the sump was surrounded on all sides, an overhead portion, meant for drawing water for the fire tenders, was reportedly left open. Residents of Meenambakkam draw water for household needs from this open slot.
Further investigation is on.
