Trying to overtake a lorry on a narrow stretch, he fell under rear wheel

A nine-year-old boy died when he tried to overtake a lorry and fell under its rear wheel on Muthumudali Street in Vyasarpadi on Thursday.

The police said S. Sanjay (also known as Rahul), a resident of Sundaram Kuppam Colony in Vyasarpadi, was riding his bicycle to a shop to get it repaired, around 4.30 p.m. on Thursday.

He was riding on a narrow stretch filled with potholes and tried to overtake a lorry from the right. He came under the rear wheel and was run over.

Sanjay died on the spot. The body was taken to the Government Stanley hospital for post-mortem. The driver of the lorry, Murugan of Purasawalkam, was arrested and a case has been filed by Kilpauk traffic investigation wing.

It's really sad that a kid lost his life! But, sometimes, I don't
get the Indian judicial system...the reporter based on the cop's
statement writes..He (Rahul/Sanjay) was riding on a "narrow stretch
filled with potholes","tried to overtake a lorry from the right" and
came under the "rear wheel" of the bus.
So why arrest the driver? If it were a bus, then both the driver &
conductor would have been arrested..but still why the arrest if it
was an incident involving the rear-wheel of the vehicle and not the
front wheel!! Also, if the potholes and narrow stretch were factors,
then the corporation/civic bodies should be also be blamed..
(mentioned in the article)!! Maybe the traffic police, who have been
doing awareness campaigns in colleges and school, should extend the
said programs to corporation schools, slums, etc etc. I feel sad for
the driver too. Now it will go on on his record that he killed
somebody, even though it not really his fault (in this specific
situation, per the report.)
