Construction material and foam, flowed out from a borewell inside the compound of a house near Mannady on Tuesday, due to Metro Rail construction nearby.
However, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials said the house and goods inside were not damaged.
Tunnelling work that began last October on the Washermanpet-Mannady stretch was in progress at the time of the incident.
“Around 2 p.m., when the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) was drilling below Anaikaran Street, foam broke out of an un-chartered borewell at the ground-floor apartment of a three-storey building.
As the borewell was located inside a sump just outside the entrance of the house, there was no damage caused. We didn’t plug the borewell ahead of the tunnelling work since the owner didn’t declare the borewell earlier when we had made inquiries,” an official said.
The foam however, ruined the water inside the sump. The sump was cleaned later in the evening.
“We are not going to compensate the owners since the house did not suffer any damage. Also, our workers have now plugged and sealed the borewell,” the official added.
Early in January, grout, a type of construction material, entered a shop through a borewell opening near Seven Wells area and caused damage to the goods inside.
Of the two TBMs tunnelling from Washermanpet to Mannady, one has drilled 1.3 km and the other, 430 metres.
