To prevent diabetes, which is fast becoming a huge burden in the country, the M.V. Hospital for Diabetes, Royapuram along with the Indian Red Cross Society and the Indian College of Physicians has launched a ‘Beat Diabetes’ campaign in universities and colleges across the State.

Launched by Tamil Nadu governor K. Rosaiah on the eve of World Health Day, the initiative will involve training faculty at all major universities in the State on healthy diets, physical activity, reducing stress and avoiding vices, said Vijay Viswanathan, head of the hospital.

“Every day we see young people in our clinics with diabetes. Our idea is to prevent diabetes among the youth, especially college students,” he said.

Governor Rosaiah said the number of people with diabetes in India had doubled from 32 million in 2000 to 63 million in 2013.

“Today’s change in lifestyle patterns, untimely food, stress and sedentary jobs have been the root cause for increased incidence of diabetes…diabetes is the gateway to many diseases,” he said.

A scarf to mark the occasion and education material to be exhibited at all colleges were also released.

A. Muruganathan, dean, Indian College of Physicians and Harish Mehta, chairman, Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu branch also participated.
