: After seven years of a failed ATM transaction, a District Consumer Forum here has directed a nationalised bank to pay Rs 28,500 as compensation to the account holder for delayed re-remittance.
M. Lakshmi, who is a postal assistant, residing in Palanipet, Arakkonam and holding a Savings Bank account in Canara Bank attempted to withdraw Rs. 15,000 on December 9, 2007 from an ATM maintained by the Indian Bank.
To her shock, the amount was not dispensed by the ATM, but she received a receipt saying that the amount has been withdrawn. After several demands the amount was credited after a delay of 130 days on May 9, 2008.
Mental agony
Aggrieved by the mental agony caused by the delay, she approached the District Consumer Dispute Forum, Chennai (South). The Canara Bank submitted that there was no deficiency of service on its part as the amount was credited to them by the Indian Bank only in April 2008.
Rejecting the Bank’s contention, the Forum issued a direction to the Canara Bank to pay for delay in crediting the amount, for the mental agony and hardship caused to her.
