The Central Crime Branch police recently arrested a sales manager of ICICI Bank on charges of sharing personal data of credit card holders facilitating his associates to commit a fraud.
According to police sources, the Cyber Crime Cell police apprehended Syed Munawar (28) and Mujahid (19) of Vellore district last week for misusing credit card details of others to book domestic flight tickets online. The modus operandi of the accused was to engage staff working in retail outlets in the city and get to know of the basic details of credit cards used by customers to make transactions.
Since ‘one-time password' is also essential to complete a transaction online, a special team acting on the instructions of Deputy Commissioner of Police (CCB) C. Sridhar made enquiries how the accused managed to obtain the personal data of credit card-holders.
It came to light during investigation that the information was shared by M. Naleeswaran (26) of Vellore district, who works as a sales manager in the Demat Wing of the ICICI Bank.
“Munawar and Nalleeswaran studied in the same college at Vellore. We are investigating how the protected bank system enabled an employee to access personal information of credit card-holders and share it with others. They have booked domestic flight tickets worth more than Rs. 20 lakh,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (CCB) M. Sudhakar said.
Naleeswaran was produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody, the sources said.
