A bag containing 25 sovereigns of jewellery was allegedly stolen from a couple in an omni bus at the private bus terminus in Koyambedu on Saturday.
This is the second such incident reported at the bus terminus in the last four days and the third, in the last two months.
According to Koyambedu police sources, Sivachokkalingam and his wife Meenakshi of Alwarpet had boarded an omni bus at T. Nagar to go to their native village in Karaikudi to attend a family function, scheduled for the next day. When the bus stopped at the Koyambedu bus terminus, Sivachokkalingam got down to buy bread, while Meenakshi was waiting in the bus with the bag containing the gold jewellery placed nearby. On his return, the couple found the bag missing, the sources added. Last Wednesday, Mohan, an MTC bus driver from Pammal, allegedly lost a suitcase containing Rs. 1 lakh in a bus at the the Koyambedu terminus. In both the cases, the victims have registered complaints with the Koyambedu police.
Jayachandran, Inspector of Police, Koyambedu, who is investigating the complaints, told The Hindu that an investigation was under way.
“The passenger who claimed to have lost Rs. 1 lakh informed us that he had withdrawn the money from an ATM and kept it in his bag before boarding the bus. In order to ascertain his statement we requested him to produce a transaction receipt. He is yet to come back,” Mr. Jayachandran added.
Two months ago, a similar case was reported from the Koyambedu private bus terminus, where a bag containing over 30 sovereigns of jewellery belonging to a couple travelling to Sirkazhi was stolen. Police are yet to crack the case.
