“We saw buildings come down in front of us and ran out with our little children, said Lathika Arya, one among a group of people from Chennai who returned home from Nepal.

Ms. Arya said a portion of the wall in the building in which she was staying in Nagarkot — an hour’s drive from Kathmandu — collapsed and she struggled to come out. “We were staying in a resort during the earthquake,” she said on her arrival at the Chennai airport late on Sunday night.

Ms. Arya, said that her husband and his parents were still in Nepal. She said her family escaped with minor injuries .

The Indian government was doing a fantastic job in carrying out rescue operations in Nepal, she said.

Earlier in the day, her father Ratan Arya said he was shocked beyond words when he heard the news about earthquake.  “I was in Sriperumbudur when my friend called up to enquire about Lathika’s family. Only then I knew about this disaster,” he said.  Lathika has been living in Nepal since she got married in 2004, Mr. Arya added.

Others who reached Chennai along with Ms. Arya include her children Manya Golyan (1), Laksh Golyan (4), Paul Khuku (40) and Pushpa Mandal (36).
