A seven-month-old baby girl went missing from Chennai Central Railway Station on Tuesday morning.
According to police, the baby is the daughter of Ramesh (24), a labourer in Nellore and Varalakshmi (22). She has not yet been named. As she had a cardiac disorder since birth, they had brought her to the city to be examined at the Government Children’s Hospital here.
The couple arrived in the city at 3.30 a.m. on the Bokaro Steel City Express. “Since it was raining heavily, they slept at the station, with the baby near them,” said V. Ponramu, deputy superintendent, government railway police, Chennai Central.
When the couple woke up at 4.30 a.m., they found the baby missing.
“At first, they searched the station on their own and then approached the police for help,” said Mr. Ponramu. Police personnel then searched the entire station. “We are now checking CCTV footage and hope to find clues ,” added Mr. Ponramu.
“We are investigating the possibility that child traffickers could have taken her. We are also looking into whether it is a case of kidnap by a childless couple. This is the first time such an incident has taken place at the station,” Mr. Ponramu said.
