In a coordinated check on autorickshaws and Tata Magic tourist taxis in the city, about 30 vehicles were detained by the Transport Department on Thursday. According to a press release from the department, since tourist permits are issued for Tata Magic vehicles, they are not allowed to operate as stage carriages.
The release said that such vehicles are parked haphazardly on public roads and create traffic hazards. The checks will continue and action will be taken against defaulters by suspension/ cancellation of permit.
All the Regional Transport Offices in the city also booked cases against overcrowded share autorickshaws.
According to a separate release from RTO (West), over 40 Tata Magic's were seized in its jurisdiction and a compounding fee of Rs. 1,85,900 was levied.
Following the checks in Chennai and Kancheepuram districts, check reports have been issued against 37 Tata Magic tourist taxis and 139 autorickshaws.
