Intending to aid differently abled commuters using public transport, the Tamil Nadu government has inaugurated an audio system in about 75 buses in Chennai that would alert them to the bus stops on the route.
Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami inaugurated the system at the Secretariat here on Monday. In the first phase, 75 buses plying on 10 routes frequently used by visually challenged persons have been installed with Radio Frequency Transmitters at a total cost of ₹3.65 lakh, according to an official release.
The Radio Frequency Receivers would be given to about 150 beneficiaries at a cost of ₹5.85 lakh, it stated. The Chief Minister also inaugurated the handover of vehicles for differently abled persons, augmentative and alternative communication system for differently abled children, among other schemes.
During the current year, vehicles would be given to a total of 1,083 beneficiaries at a total cost of ₹6.36 crore, it stated. Mr. Palaniswami also gave away financial assistance of ₹3 lakh to differently abled student R. Rajaram, who had scored high marks in the Class 10 and 12 exams, to aid his higher studies.
