Passengers waiting at the Simpson bus stop on Anna Salai complained of suffering mild electric shocks from the metal pillars of the shelter on Friday evening.

Many passengers who leaned against the pillars claimed to have been taken aback by electric shocks. Some passengers were found warning others who arrived at the bus stop. “There is a box attached to one of the pillars and we think the shock must be due to a short circuit,” said S. Arivalagan, a commuter who was waiting at the stop.

When contacted, officials of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) said the box was meant for streetlights and was handled by the Chennai Corporation.

“The passengers must have felt the shocks when the street lights were switched on. We have rectified the fault, anyhow,” said an official.

The bus shelter is situated opposite the New Secretariat Building and buses including 88-K, A-51 and M88R halt at this stop.
