Relatives of a 23-year-old woman — who was six months pregnant and who lost her baby after being allegedly attacked by an elderly woman during a quarrel — staged a road roko outside Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital in Triplicane on Wednesday afternoon, demanding the arrest of the assailant.
According to Semmencherry police, Kavitha, a resident of Erikarai in Gandhi Nagar, Sholinganallur, was assaulted after she confronted Pattammal (55) outside the latter’s house in Tsunami Colony, Semmrncherry and the two got into a heated argument.
Pattammal had reportedly bitten the arm of her neighbour, Divya (21), who is Kavitha’s sister-in-law, in an earlier argument. “Divya complained about the attack to Kavitha who questioned Pattammal. The argument escalated into a fistfight and Kavitha, who was six months pregnant, was attacked and violently pushed to the ground,” said an investigating officer.
Kavitha was brought to the hospital, but doctors said the baby had died and would have to be removed. The family staged a road roko demanding action against the attacker.
Kavitha’s husband, Divakar (25) is an autorickshaw driver and the couple, who married in 2012, were expecting their first child, police said.
