Students of the Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai, have urged the authorities to initiate criminal and departmental action against faculty members allegedly responsible for the death of a final year student in October.

P. Prakash, a final-year student of the college, committed suicide by hanging in Vellore in October alleging harassment and discrimination by a few staff members. Since only a case was registered against three staff members, including the principal, and no follow-up action was taken, students sat on protest for two days from Thursday stressing their demand.

CPI (M) State unit secretary G. Ramakrishnan and office-bearers of the Students’ Federation of India took part in the agitation to show their solidarity. However, students withdrew their agitation after an assurance from officials.
