A weekend outing at a lake near Tambaram ended on a tragic note when two boys drowned in it on Saturday afternoon.
Pallikaranai police said Sheikh Dawood (12) of Bajanai Koil Street in Hasthinapuram was a student of class VIII at Shiksha, a private school near his home.
His relative S. Jaffer, also 12, called on him on Saturday morning and the two decided to go to the nearby Nanmangalam Lake, a sprawling water body measuring over 150 acres, with a few friends.
While the group was initially playing near the ‘kalangal’ (outlet point), the two are reported to have ventured deep into the water.
The other boys raised an alarm and residents living nearby arrived there. A few men jumped into the lake, brought the boys out of the water and rushed them to a private clinic nearby, but it was too late. Their bodies were shifted to the Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
