In a daring daylight burglary at a bustling Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) tenement on South Boag Road, T Nagar on Friday, burglars broke into a flat and escaped with gold jewellery weighing over 23 sovereigns.
The burglary took place around 11.30 a.m. in the fourth-floor residence of Ganesh, a construction supervisor who lives there with his wife Sarala and two children.
Speaking to The Hindu, Ganesh said that his wife left the house around 11 a.m. “She returned around noon and found the front door lock broken. The house was ransacked. A door inside was broken. A cupboard was open and over 23 sovereigns were missing,” he added.
More jewellery that had been kept in a safe remained untouched, as the burglars’ attempts to break open the safe failed. Ganesh, who was at his work site in T. Nagar, rushed home after Sarala called him and told him about the burglary.
The TNSCB tenement is in a thickly-populated area with shops, houses and heavy traffic. “It is shocking how the burglars managed to enter my house and then leave without being noticed by anyone in the area,” Ganesh said.
Teynampet police have registered a case and conducted a preliminary probe.

May I ask how come someone who has 23 soveriegns and more in safe - get to stay in "Slum Clearance Board" housing facility?
Classic example of misusing governments schemes?
