Residents of some localities will likely see completed stretches of the grid system of roads this week. Officials in zones such as Sholinganallur, Valasaravakkam, Manali and Perungudi at a review meeting in Ripon Building on Monday said that work on all fronts in some of the stretches will be completed this week.
The work on development of the road grids, that includes components such as streetlights, street furniture, footpaths, ducts for cables and stormwater drains, was initially divided into packages worth around Rs. 10 crore each. However, the problems faced by the civic body in areas including Tiruvottiyur due to a lukewarm response to the tender delayed commencement in some areas.
Works on as many as 214 roads are under way as part of the project covering 360 roads. The Chennai Corporation had kick-started the ambitious road grid-improvement work for the newly-added areas under the mega city development mission four months ago.
All the roads have plastic as additional binding material and the initiative covers the eight zones that were added to the city limits last year.
As the deadline for completion of the work is September, the civic body has asked all contractors to speed up the work before the onset of the north east monsoon.
The grid system focuses on clearing traffic bottlenecks around major junctions. Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy inaugurated the improvement works in some parts of Alandur zone on Monday. Mr. Duraisamy urged the residents to examine the work and ensure proper implementation of the project.
