Suresh was returning from work when the vehicle collided with his motorcycle

An employee of a private company was killed after being knocked down by a garbage truck on Sardar Patel Road in Guindy on Tuesday.

Suresh Alrtum (41), a resident of Anna Nagar First Main Road in Velachery, was returning from his office in T. Nagar when the garbage truck collided with his motorcycle near the Central Leather Research Institute. Mr. Suresh was killed on the spot.

According to the police, Selvam, who was behind the wheel of the truck on contract with the Chennai Corporation, was arrested and remanded to judicial custody. The garbage-laden truck was on its way to the Perungudi dumping yard.

However, Chennai Corporation officials denied the accident was caused by any of their trucks used for garbage clearance in the city.

As many as 230 compactors and 95 debris-carrying trucks, apart from vehicles taken on contract by private operators, are used by the Chennai Corporation for conservancy operations, an official said.

Areas within the Chennai Corporation limits generate over 4,000 tonnes of garbage every day. Most of the garbage is transferred to Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dumping yards through trucks.
