The boys, from Tondiarpet, were aged 16 and 18 and were with a group

Two youths are missing after they went for a dip at Marina Beach opposite Ezhilagam, on Sunday. The boys, hailing from Tondiarpet were aged 16 and 18.

K. Deenadayalan (18) and U. Madan Kumar (16), a schoolboy, were among a group of boys who went to the beach together.

The group went into the water around 3.30 p.m. and when they emerged around an hour later, they found that the two were missing. When their search turned futile, the boys reported the matter to Anna Square police. Deenadayalan is a student of a polytechnic college in Manali while Madan Kumar is a class XII student of CSI School in Royapuram, police said.

While the bodies of the boys have not yet been recovered, police said three more persons have been reported missing from under the Marina Beach police station limits, which is close by. Police personnel have put up a sign declaring the stretch between Anna Square and Light House a danger zone. Though the notice board, put up by the Triplicane Police District, contains messages in English, Hindi and Tamil, beach-goers routinely ignore the warning, police say.

In 2008, a mongrel attached itself to the Anna Square police and caught the attention of people when it chased away children who strayed into the water. When the inspector was shifted out, the mongrel also left.

The present inspector A.C. Gnanasekaran said the every day, around 50 policemen patrol the beach but they are unable to prevent crowds from entering the sea.
