Corporation of Chennai will begin relaying of 1,105 interior roads at a cost of Rs. 100 crore this month. The total length of the roads is 245.1 km.
Tender for bituminous roads with plastic content has been floated and bids will be opened on August 10. After the Corporation Council’s approval this month, the civic body has planned to intensify road re-laying work before the onset of northeast monsoon.
Alandur zone will be the largest beneficiary with Rs. 11.37 crore allocated for relaying interior roads in the area. Newly-added areas such as Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Perungudi and Sholinganallur are other major beneficiaries.
All zones in the old city limits except Anna Nagar will be covered under the work. Anna Nagar, however, will have more cement concrete roads.
“We will complete the roads that require immediate attention before the monsoon,” said a senior official of Chennai Corporation.
The work on 1,084 cement concrete roads, at a cost of Rs. 90 crore, will begin a few weeks later as the work can be carried out even during the monsoon, the official said.
The date of opening of bids for cement concrete roads has not been finalised.
