With the work on grid system of roads under the mega city development mission gaining momentum in various parts of the city, the Chennai Corporation commenced training for all its engineers by creating a model of a standard speed breaker on the premises of Ripon Buildings.
The model speed breaker has been constructed according to Indian Roads Congress (IRC) standards and all new speed breakers will adhere to them.
The civic body had identified over 400 speed breakers for redesign by incorporating safety features following the death of State Cooperation Minister Sellur K. Raju’s son in a motorcycle accident at a speed breaker on NSC Bose Road a few weeks ago.
Most of the identified speed breakers were found to be badly designed and not adhering to IRC standards. Over 30 speed breakers were found to be badly designed in Sholinganallur zone. In northern zones such as Tiruvottiyur, most of the 30 identified speed breakers were found to be unauthorised.
The work on new speed breakers will start after the training sessions. The Corporation is likely to commence identifying spots along the newly-developed road grids where speed breakers are required.

Speed breakers are designed long back as per IRC. Instead of fixing responsibility on those who did not follow the guidelines, illusion is being created as though something new is being done on speed breakers, that too after the death of a minister`s son. Wide spread violation is unpunishable. This is the order of the day. Vazhga Bharatham.
The speed breakers should be designed in such a way that the motorist
would stop or slow down the vehicle to go over it. But the speed breaker
shown above is definitely not going to meet its purpose. It looks more
like a "speed ramp" encouraging racing motorists to fly over it.
It is high time to bring out right design for speed breakers. Now they are only vehicle breakers. There should be clear guidelines/ rules /restrictions for adding such speed breakers with proper caution boards
for the vehicles.Pedestrians should be ensured of walking plateforms/ pavements without any hindrence like EB/ Phone / cable Distribution boxes etc and they must also be user friendly along with road crossing
facility with proper signal/ marking . Vehicle drivers should follow / obey these instructions with proper speed control descipline.Authorities should ensure strict implementation early.
While the redesigning of the speed breakers is welcome, it is also
necessary to examine the very basic principle for locating a speed
breaker. Often at the time of road relaying, Corporation workers put a
speed breaker at the request of the local residents who want to avoid
traffic passing through their locality. Speed breakers have come up in
many places where they are not required at all. They should all be
removed.
The need for speed breakers is only a proof of lack of self discipline
in our drivers who do not obey a speed limit sign. One rarely sees
speed breakers in western countries!
Will Corportation relook into the causes of all deaths in roads in the last 3 years and come out with a comprehensive plan and followup with actions? It's time we give serious thought to these fundamental issues in the country before taking pride in saying we are the fastest growing country etc.,
So, you require the death of a minister's son to have these monstrous speed breakers removed.
when people make noise about the incovenience & no care attitude of the civic body there is no body to hear.when an ministers son killed due to the speed breaker people are ready to cahnge the design. This all happen only in india becuase there is no value for common people.
