They are demanding a 50 per cent increase in salaries
Three zones of the Chennai Corporation – Teynampet, Kodambakkam and Adyar – which generate around 1,600 tonnes of garbage daily went without garbage collection on Tuesday with compactor drivers of the Chennai Municipal Solid Waste Pvt. Ltd. (Ramky Enviro Engineers) going on strike.
They are on strike demanding a 50 per cent pay hike. The company, which clears garbage from these zones, had offered an incentive to the drivers for additional trips made to the garbage dumping yard. However, the drivers turned down the offer saying that tonnage incentives would not do.
Each zone has around 70 drivers and 22 compactors and they make roughly 80 trips to dumping yards. On Tuesday, even after the Corporation stepped in with its vehicles and manpower only around 800 tonnes were cleared. The rest remains in bins where door-to-door collection by tricycle men had dumped the garbage.
Balaji, a resident of T.Nagar, said garbage clearance by the private agency was very poor even otherwise.
“Many roads have unserviced overflowing bins forcing residents to dump garbage around the bins. Tricycle collection has also not been implemented on all streets. The company cites manpower shortage, but that cannot be accepted as reason enough for garbage to rot on the roads,” he said.
Corporation Commissioner D.Karthikeyan said the issue had been sorted and said that there was no strike as such. “Only a few vehicles did not march out,” he said.
Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy said despite its previous track record of poor garbage clearance in other cities, the Corporation was forced to give the contract to the company because it was the lowest bidder.

All are just blamming Corp, not even think on their mistakes. The wastage/garbage should be reduced at source itself by dont ask poletheen cover while purchase anything, which again goes to garbage bin. Dont put papers in the bin- give to recycler. REduce the usage of parer cup in office/commercial place, etc
Just try to follow by all.. then see result
Just privatize this sector with due support by the state and Central govt.
cleanliness - hygiene- sanitation -public toilets -environment
should be given prime impotence rather than political bickering and wasting precious time on corruption and porn gate ?
Build clean India first -first in mind and then on ground -let it speak volume for itself.
It is the responsibility of the Corporation to Clear the Garbage.
They can do it by engaging thier own people or sub contract it.
The method of payment to Contractors by tonnage clearance is baseless.
Suppose 100 tons garbage is generated and the contract agency clears only 80 tons, they get paid for 80 tons and are happy. Who will clear the balance 20 tons?
It should be based on total removal of Garbage from the city Limits and transfer to Garbage dumps irrespective of tonnage.
Corporation has to take up this clearing on a war footing.
The Chief Minister is the CEO of Tamil Nadu and is ultimately responsible for keeping
the city clean. The garbage collection, disposal and recycling is still of a third world
standard. Our contractors don't have the expertise to deal with this very basic issue
as they have not seen or known anything better. They are politically backed and
parallel the garbage bins that they service. A way forward would be to get
contractors from Malaysia, South Korea, Hongkong or Singapore to tidy up the
city.....
Need a solution? Bring back Onyx!!!
It is pathetic! Corporation cannot wash off their hands and it is their primary resposibility to clear the garbage and keep the city clean either by their staff or through the contractors. Public did not appoint the private agency for this. It is the corporation and they should pull up the agency and change them. Mayor cannot escape by giving some lame excuses. He has a role to play and he should act strongly against such agencies. Else what is the difference between corporation staff and the staff of the privat agency? Such irresponsible employees should be sacked immediately!
ONYX had been doing a wonderful job. The roads were clean and the garbage was cleared exactly at the same time everyday. There were passionate about making Chennai a neat and clean city. Then we have had Neel Metal. The nature of service provided by them was poor when compared to ONYX. Now this Ramky Enviro Engineers...they hardly care for anything.
Please come and have a look at K.K.Nagar and Virugambakkam areas...the garbage is overflowing and occupying half of the road.
Who is to blame for such a debacle??
How a contract be issued again to an agency that has not been performing well in the past.
Shouldn't the government blacklist him so that he does not appear in the competitors for the
cleaning contract? Garbage clearance should be considered an essential service and hence
they cannot go on strike. The diseases that spread due to unattended garbage far outweighs
the benefits losses incurred by the government hospitals handling epidemics. If this the state
of affairs in cities what would it be in small towns and villages? And we call ourselves part of
the rapidly developing countries BRICS. We only deserve to be downgraded because we
lack even the edifice for good governance .
The company is duty bound to give services as per contract whatever be their problem. It is
their business to set thing right at their end and it shows the poor management of Ramki.
Corporation commissioner saying no strike is misleading and even if one bin is not cleared
Issue should be taken up as per contract. I agree with Mayor. Lowest biding is an ill in the
government contracts which always tell on the poor quality of work done.
