Motorcycle-borne chain snatchers have run riot in different parts of the city in the last couple of days

The culprits have snatched chains weighing more than 30 sovereigns .

Police sources said two such incidents took place in the early hours on Tuesday in Kodambakkam and Arumbakkam . One of the victims, Padma (55), a bank employee and resident of Jai Nagar, Koyambedu, had gone out of her house to throw garbage in a bin nearby. Two unidentified men on a motorcycle rode close to her and snatched her seven-sovereign chain and sped away.

Similarly, Chandrika (42), a resident of Kilpauk, was targeted by snatchers on McNicholas Road in Chetpet at 6.30 a.m. when she had gone for her morning walk. She was robbed of her seven-sovereign chain.

Three incidents were reported on Monday evening. A police patrol team gave a chase to the suspects who snatched a six-sovereign chain from Hemalatha (55), a resident of Pudupet. She was walking home after purchasing some household items and the crime took place around 8 p.m. on Pantheon Road in Egmore.

In another incident, a nine-sovereign chain was snatched from Jayachitra (43) of Pudupet around 9 p.m. when she was walking home after closing her grocery shop in Dasaprakash. Few minutes later, two men on a motorcycle snatched a three-sovereign chain from a senior citizen in Arumbakkam. The victim, Puspavalli (61), was walking to a shop near her house, sources said.
