Court had given civic body 6 weeks to accomplish the task
The Chennai Corporation on Saturday removed encroachments on NSC Bose Road. This follows the directive given by the Madras High Court on Wednesday.
The civic body was directed to take steps for the removal of encroachments on NSC Bose Road in six weeks.
The First Bench comprising Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam had passed the orders on a contempt petition filed by K.R. Ramaswamy alias ‘Traffic' Ramaswamy, after perusing the affidavit filed by Chennai Police Commissioner, J.K. Tripathy, and also photographs produced by the petitioner.
In the affidavit, the Police Commissioner had claimed that it was the Corporation that would issue notices and take steps for removing encroachments on streets and pavements.
A large number of police personnel were present at the site where all encroachments, including big commercial establishments, were removed on Saturday.
On Friday, the civic body had warned commercial establishments on NSC Bose Road to remove the encroachments themselves. Corporation authorities had also removed a few bottlenecks to pedestrian movement on Mannar Samy Koil Street in Royapuram zone.
However, it had to suspend the work midway as traffic police sensed an impending “law and order” problem in Royapuram in opposition to the eviction drive on Friday.
Adequate police force was present on NSC Bose Road on Saturday as the civic body had to suspend the eviction drive the previous day after portions of over nine shops causing hindrance to pedestrian movement were removed on Mannar Samy Koil Street.
In Royapuram zone, a number of encroachments are still found on various roads, including Monegar Choultry Road, G A Road, Mannar Samy Koil Street and Ibrahim Salai.

I do not know why we allow this to happen.
The minuate a single encroachment happens, the authorities should be able to nip it in the bud. Make a named person responsible to carry out the task. Reward him for every succesful removal and he shoould be answerable and lose his job if he cannot give an explanation for his inaction. This way we can avoid corruption and officials turning a blind eye.
Well done, If the same could be continued on entire north Chennai
vicinity, much awaited traffic hurdles could be solved
It is good encroachments are removed near high court. But about, luz, pondy bazaar and
other places. Why no one takes up the plight of pedestrian who had to walk on roads where
there is no side walk.? Let the government provide side walks on all streets so the need not
walk on roads competing with vehicles hindering their movements and causing avoidable
accidents
Why does a corporation have to wait for the court to ask it to do its job?!!
