She was reportedly caught while passing on her answer sheet to a friend
A 14-year-old school girl, V. Kavitha, committed suicide by setting herself ablaze on Thursday, after she was warned by her school authorities on Wednesday for allegedly helping a friend copy in the annual examination. The class IX student was reportedly caught while passing on her answer sheet to the friend.
In her slam book, which was at her Ayanavaram residence, she had written that her ‘madam' had scolded her and that she felt humiliated. She had used English letters to write Tamil sentences. Kavitha, a student of Dr. Salai Govindarajan Matriculation School for Girls in Ayanavaram took her social science exam on Wednesday afternoon and resorted to the extreme step around 2.30 p.m. on Thursday.
On Thursday evening, the locality was crowded with neighbours and relatives gathering around their home on Parasuram Eswaran Koil Street. Kavitha's mother V. Parvathi was unable to come to terms with the shocking incident. “She would study very well and we have never had a chance to scold her. She was disappointed that somehow she had earned a bad reputation because of this incident. But we never thought she would resort to such an extreme step,” she said.
“In her school, teachers said the exam supervisor caught her passing on her answer sheet to another girl seated beside her. They scolded her and asked her to bring her parent for an explanation, in order to be allowed to take her Tamil - paper II on Friday” said Parvathi, who works as an office assistant at a school in Anna Nagar.
On Thursday afternoon, Kavitha went to the school with her father Venugopal, a cab driver, to the school and met the headmistress and teacher. An investigating officer at the Ayanavaram station said: “Since she was good in studies, the headmistress simply warned her and obtained a written explanation from her.”
After the meeting in the afternoon, Venugopal and Kavitha reached home. Soon after, Venugopal went to a hotel nearby to buy some lunch, and Kavitha was alone at home. She poured kerosene on her body and set herself ablaze, the officer added.
Neighbours, along with Venugopal who returned shortly, rushed Kavitha to the Government Kilpauk hospital, but she died on the way.
Ayanavaram police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating further. Kavitha's slam book, in which she had written on Thursday morning before going to school, was being examined by the police in the evening.

The girl has met a very unfair end to her life. I don't know if she was publicly
humiliated, reading the article it doesn't look like that. As a society we need to think
as how and why did the girl think of Suicide as a solution?
My condolences to the family at this time.
It is very difficult to understand what happened to the young girl that she had to resort to this extreme action. My comment is not directed towards this family but to the parents that pamper their child and expect the world will also do the same to the child. When the child experiences a bitter event that she/he was not exposed to, the child is unable to tolerate and doesn't know how to handle it. The parents, siblings and other family members might always be soft towards the child, but will every other society member do the same? No. Parents need to be kind to their kids, but at the same time, need to bring up the kids in such a way that they can handle bitter events as well.
Give your kids beds of roses, but teach them how to handle the thorns as well. They'll flourish!
Children should learn how to take failure, how to accept scolding and
how how to accept life with all its ups and downs. Inner psychological
strength is very much lacking in today's generation. When it is a
nuclear family children do not learn sharing, lack certain depth in
relationship which comes through fights, give and take among brothers
and sisters. There is a serious lacuna in bringing up the children.
My deep condolences to the girl's family. Why does these things keep happening? what could be the reason? This generation needs self-motivation a lot and lacks confidence which is again an atmosphere created by the so called "education". This is one reason why our kids are not really independent and are always dependent on something/someone which is again inherited when they grow up and even when they travel to other countries! In this case you can't blame the teacher nor the girl's friend its the lack of confidence in the girl itself or some sort of immense fear she had for her teacher. The situation in schools has never changed in years. This comment's not going to mark any change the administrators in schools think but it will be great if "educated" (not necessarily a degree) people run educational institutes.
I think we need to include "self confidence" classes to the students
practically. I don't know what they are up to. This is not anyone's
fault. Not the school, not the teacher. No one, except the girl. She
should have accepted the fact that Life is not the same always and this
is no big issue in order to commit suicide.
A real incident of pity. The girl and her emotions are not properly
understood by either teachers or parents. I feel and attribute some of
this type of behaviour to parents who are not allotting sufficient time
in spending with children and understanding their emotions. Recently
another student killed the teacher. Many of these parents are
engrossed in watching the idiot box, nobody is has enough time to spend
with children. If in the case of only child, too much of or
nothing, type of interest is taken. Either way I blame this TV culture
for being ruining the emotional relationships resulting in some
unfortunate incidents.
I think the Teachers and her Family are responsible for that. Just imagine, she preferred a heavily torturous suicide over facing some days of humiliation. This lack of Confidence and Fear gets imbibed in Children, not on their own, but by the surrounding environment and upbringing. She must have been under an immense stress from Parents/ Teacher side. The stress was intolerable for her tender age. Parents/ Teachers failed in their responsibility to counsel Kavitha before she retorts to this unimaginable step. I hope that our education system learns from this incident and her 'Sacrifice' doesn't go in vain. May her soul rest in peace.
It is neither the mistake of the examiner nor the parents. There is always a pressure from the weak students in exam hall to good students to part with their answers. This happened to my daughter also in +2 exam.I told her not to part with the answer sheets or talk to anybody. If there is high disturbance from her fellow students,I told her to report to the authorities immediately. Many of the so called BIG schools allow copying to boost their results. It the Karma of Kavitha to commit suicide. What else the reasons can be?
Lets make this exam culture removed. Make a objective type of online examinations with a computer for individual in a isolated cabin.
Does it make sense? Because this kind of exams brings in lot of trouble for all.
Once again a similar kind of incident. My suggestion is that parents
must take care of providing confidence and a good space for kids to
share things with them. The teacher could also have handled better as
talking to the girl privately than scolding in front of other kids. The
kids this generation are not ready to accept defeat or tough journey in
life which is not a good sign if you want to succeed in life.
