Residents of the city and suburbs, who have been facing one-hour load shedding, will hereafter have an additional hour of power cut from Monday.
The revised system of load shedding will be implemented in such a way that the duration will be stretched to one more hour.
A senior official of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) said two hours of load shedding in the city and suburbs would be implemented between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. The schedule had been drawn up in such a way that the hardship to residents would be minimum.
The load shedding schedule would be regularly revised once a month on a rotation basis to avoid inconvenience. The schedule would be changed at the end of March, adds the official. The revised system of load shedding for Chennai and suburbs is part of the new restriction and control measures announced by the TANGEDCO on Saturday.
The reaction from residents is on the expected lines. Many of them are unhappy over the TANGEDCO's move.
D.S. Kumar, a resident of Chinmaya Nagar, Virugambakkam, complains that the two-hour power cut would cause severe inconvenience. With his daughter preparing for class 10 examinations, Mr. Kumar is concerned that she might not be able to concentrate on her studies because of the power cut to be carried out during day. He hopes that Chief Minister Jayalalithaa would take steps to speed up the completion of the power projects to bring relief to the people.
V. Rama Rao, a social activist from Nanganallur, suggests that the implementation of the new measures be deferred to April, as the public examinations would be over by then.
He also wants the State government to curb the lavish use of electricity by business houses and commercial establishments.
But, R. Umapathy, a resident of Jamalia, does not mind load shedding during off-peak hours. He says, “So long as it is not being carried out during early morning and late evening hours, I am not bothered in any way.”

Government can implement the System to provide LED lighting instead providing Mixer, Grinder, fan...these are not to sustain the resources. No plan from Government. Must have creative plan how to soustain the resources. always our govt lack in thinking. Good in wasting money. If govt give me opportunity i can implement the system How to save Electricity.
How can a responsible body and CM make an announcement for only 4 hours
power cut and do not want to monitor the execution level in all areas?
Unfortunately, the announcements only change from day to day and the
pathetic situation remains the same everywhere!
The goverment not having proper pre planning Ex( Roads Always we are starting the expansion after traffic started) the same way this also, we have to start thing before ten years there are lot of power save option are there
1.As one of the forum given sugestion like shop board are wasting the power
2.Goverment as to reduce the price of CFL bulb which can easily buy by low level also
3.Only produce five star rated product
4.Public also switch of the unwanted elrctical item in our house and street
What happened to the "4 Hour Only Power Cuts for Rest of Tamil Nadu from 27th Feb" announcement made by our CM and TANGEDCO\TNEB? The Powers Cuts are still ranging between 8 - 10 Hours in Coimbatore for 27th Feb.
urban areas are using enormous power, they use airconditioners, etc, then why for only rural areas,8/9hrs powercut, while for city people only 2 hrs.this is really meaningless.if the Govt wants to save power, the vice-versa case should be there.
For the above Power crisis partial solution is immediatetely State Govt co-operate with the central Govt. in commssioning the Kodankulam nuecliar Power station
Next a high power committee with eminent retired engineers be constituted to go through the affairs of TANGEDCO and see all Power Plants are running to the full capacity.Any plant being idle for want of spares and other difficulties may be located and arranged to be procured without any delay. Power losses which is high in the grid shoulbe reduced by carrying out necessary improvement works that is equalent to adding genarating capacity.
These are some steps required immediately
Bring Koodankulam plant online after crushing the agitation with strong
hands. stop giving power to new multi-storied buildings until power
situation improves. Charge heavily AC users.
Govt, instead of undoing/dismantling the DMK Govt's projects like Anna
Library etc., should focus on power generation with 20 year's
projected need of the state. It should stop freebies like grinders,
mixies, fans etc which are power- consuming. After all for any activity
whether Industry, Agriculture etc, nothing will move without power.
All endeavour should be to attain a"Surplus " state position in power
generation. Let the Govt, have a far- sighted approach & foresight.
Otherwise, Tamil Nadu will plunge into a dark state and lose all its
prominence in achieving greater heights. No use in proclaiming that
Tamil Nadu will compete with Gujarat as a model state.
Recently when I visited a store in Pondy Bazaar during afternoon hours
and at that time power cut happened. I happen to come across a group
well learned gentle man & women who were cribbing about the pains that
they had to undergo for the next one hour. I couldn't resist myself, I
went ahead and explained them about power crisis that happens for 8
hours outside city limit. Most of the people around me, including the
shop keepers and the auto drivers were dumbfounded on hearing the
news. They were feeling pity on me and for the people who are living
outside chennai .Well, I understand the whole nation including our
state is undergoing power crisis, and yes there is a lot of economic
reform that needs to happen to solve the power crisis.Until this
crisis gets resolved, I would recommend the press to echo the concerns
of the people of Tamil Nadu as a whole so that a united voice can be
raised to seek a faster and a better solution to solve this crisis
I am extremely disappointed with the author's bias towards potraying
that "Dark days" are only for city esidents. Many residents were in
state of Dark for many years, just explore outside city limits
(begining from Vandalur upto Kanyakumari). Residents living outside
also have kids who are aspiring to perform well in their exams and
they also have businesses and daily chores to perform. I am not
against anyone and I am not jealous about people living in Chennai
enjoying the comforts of less power redudction, but at the same time I
am worried that no medium is covering the concerns, disappointments
and the hard ships of the people who are living outside Chennai. It is
totally a different world when you stay outside the city limits. When
the power crisis surfaced in 2008, I believe the city was undergoing
only powercuts for duration between 30minutes to one hour. While rest
of the TN residents outside of Chennai were facing power cuts anywhere
between 6 to 10 hours
Chennaiites now feel the pinch. We are experiencing power outage for more than eight hours so far. All should share the burden equally. We also have children preparing for board examinations.
If the power cuts can happen during the time of these "mega serials",
that would be perfect. No complaints.
I would plainly put the blame on the people of Tamilnadu.Bus fares were steeply increased two months ago, no protests nothing. we just accepted it.When there was a petrol hike we kept quiet, again no protests. We all know that nothing is going to happen by protest ,but still we have to register our protest.Power cut is more than eight hours and still zero protest. If this was happening in say Kerala, by now there would have been hartals, road blocking, kheravo in eb offices and the media (both visual and print) would take up the matter in such a way that the government will be presurised to ease the situation. Not able to even sleep as there is a one hour power cut from 3 am to 4 am.
Tamil Nadu government should consider distributing solar cookers free of cost to all the households instead of TVs, Mixers and grinders and should subsidise solar powered street lighting in all the villages and towns. This will solve the power problem to a large extent.
Similar situation will soon arise in the Railways, petrol, diesel and LPG sectors. When will people understand that if we want good services we should be prepared to pay for them. The Railway passenger fares have not been raised for over 10 years. Now the Railways are having no money for maintaining their services. The losses of Oil Companies are increasing and the prices of LPG and diesel are not being raised. Eventually who is paying for this or who is going to pay for all this. The politicians make a great tamasha of having spared the common man the price rise. But when situations arise of No power, No LPG, No new trains etc it is then that the real payment will have to be made by the common man. This is a main reason for power shortages. The power companies do not have money to buy power, the generating companies are not getting paid and in turn they are not paying for coal or not repaying loans.
Where does this all end ??
please visit www.onechildonelight.org for the solution to this problem. a small solar LED study light for around Rs. 400 can address the problem adequately.
I am so glad that Chennai is also beginning to get a taste of hardship
that people elsewhere in the state have been experiencing on a much
larger scale. If you have load sheds of 3-4 hours in Madras for a day,
you can reduce the load sheds in other 'lesser important' parts of the
state significantly.
The politicians of TN should promise the ceaseless electricity instead of promising freebies. I see lot of small business's suffering of this power crisis. of course they can use generators, but diesel price is no less to be happy about. so, do something and do it soon.
All should learn to conserve Energy. Reduce the unnecessary usage. Tariffs to high consumption Commercial Institutions be increased immediately. Rooftop Solar will be a very good solution and the State gives some rebates on initial investment for this capital intensive project which in turn is a distributed Generation and this will tremendously reduce the system losses. The electricity network Transmission and distribution losses are high. The investment required to improve the system can be postponed. With the high Sunshine hours in Tamil Nadu one could generate Solar PV electricity at costs compared to small diesel generation which also produces sound/noise pollution and pollution of the atmosphere with CO2 CO S oxides. Solar PV prices have come down very much and more people use same the price will go down further. More green jobs as installers will be created. Local manufacture of the Solar PV will flourish with a boost of the Economy! Use of Solar LED lamps and Fans are available.
TN people deserve it.I have heard stories about rich people (making more than 100K a month ) getting free TV set under the previous regime. They hardly murmur about electricity cuts. it is an accepted reality. Tax payers money & government revenue (mostly from liquor shop) is always spent for political gains. That money could be used to solve ever present electricity problem in TN.
This is a complex issue. On one hand, the Governments have handled the power situation very badly for the past three years. When the current Govt made promises that there will be no power cut, people blindly accepted it without grasping the actual situation. On the other hand, the Govt was looking at Kudankulam to provide some respite, and now that has been meaninglessly delayed. I understand the issue of safety, but blockades and strikes aren't going to help. If the people who are protesting are really genuine, they should ask for a safety inspection and probe by qualified people, rather than ask it to be shut down. Now the Govt it yanking the people's chain. Because of a few hundred protesting millions are going to suffer this summer.
The first thing people should start doing is to stop paying electricity tax. Likewise, road, water n other miscellaneous taxes if they are not upto standards. This may well include only a minority of people as many of us don't even bother to pay taxes. But the ones who doesnt bother paying electricity tax will still have power because they have an alternative in the name of generators (from the money being collated all these years). With respect to Kundakulam, i think things will be fine if Govt. sticks to the rules and regulations of handling and generating nuclear power. Both the parties (NGO and Govt) will be convinced. Another thing to keep in mind is GO GREEN!. Couple of them here have mentioned about solar panels. Its high time we start thinking about a green future.
Management of Power supply in TN is an example of incompetence, ignorance and utter lack of Planning. It lacks an understanding of the realities of managing Power Stations, Generation, Transmission and Distribution. A detailed white paper on the demand and supply situation - NOW and in the coming five years will throw up the realities. A modern and developing State with big ambitions must have professionals at its helm - not inept, incompetent people. They talk a lot but do so little. Public memory is short and we are a very tolerant people and are willing to tolerate all failures with vague excuses. Let us start with a realistic power management strategy for the immediate term and for the next 12 months. Do it in detail and take the public in confidence. Invite suggestions and public participation - not the ''we know it all' attitude that we witness. Why is it that institutions such as FICCI, CII and others do not play an active vocal role. Why is media is fighting shy of discussion?
1 hour power cuts become 2 hour power cuts and yet the TANGEDCO management and personell will keep getting huge "bonuses" year after year for incompetent performance. The old TNEB underwent more of a fake restructuring as all the units of generation, transmission and distribution were not truly separated or ring-fenced as individual operating units with their own rights to buy and sell power in a multi-player market. The transmission lines are close to collapse and industry is forced to endure hardships along with the common folk. The previous State government never accomplished any true reform and the current one is also afraid of implemnet real reforms for the benefits of the State.
It's requested of the chief minister to speedily implement the
kudankulam power plant, as the dummy fuel rods have already been
inserted into the reactors and if the steps are taken to make the
plant operational immediately then hopefully within four months from
now the power-deficit can be eliminated completely and solar power is
not the option to reduce the power-deficit as the per unit cost for
the power produced from solar energy is comparatively greater than
that of the power produced from the nuclear resources, the reason
being the raw materials used in the solar panels-mostly silicon is
expensive and will not be economically viable for the government.
The fundamental problem lies not in power shortage but the addiction and laziness (of body and mind) borne of a hundred years of spending many millenia of nature's thrift in stashing away precious energy. And no power is a one time investment. Recognition of the problem precedes the solution. If Chennaiites want nuclear power, let them build the plant in one of the estates of the city. High time all political 'leaders' told the people the truth.
Ashamed of the state of our nation. We do not even have enough power to provide electricity, and still our politicians do not have the will power to see Kudunkulam through.
The power situation will be an evergreen problem. without that what
would the parties claim to do solve after winning an election! the
power situation even after more than 60 years of independence has not
improved. We can never become a developed country until the woes of
power and infrastructure are freed from corruption.
it is high time political parties and associated people do not be or support blockades in
getting power (not their power though!) in every possible means including nuclear. at all
available opportunities from time immemorial politicians never forget to say - americavai
par, russiavai par - but the same people are not really seeing as to why America or Russia
have no power cuts and they mostly generate power by nuclear modes. It is time that all
wake up at least now and start working constructively.
Ridiculous! Ironically, TANGEDCO is either kept in the dark or has
turned the proverbial 'blind eye' to the existing 'power cuts', 'load
shedding', or whatever. Even children in Tamilnadu know that there is
no power for at least 4 hours every day. And it is a great injustice
that when the rest of Tamilnadu suffer blackouts, Chennaiites enjoy
22 or 23 hours of power. Grave Injustice.
Despite knowing the fact of power shortage, we are hesitant to
leverage available resources. At certain point we condemn
government for not providing the jobs, sufficient resources for
development and in another point we stand rigid against the
available opportunities.
As all the security and safety measures were done by the
officials for nuclear power plant, than why are we protesting
against this ample opportunity to fulfill our needs?
It is our right to concern about our safety first but we should
stand firm with enhanced possibilities.
Yet Kudankulam remains 24hrs shut.
Well done Anand I, you have taken the initiative and done the right thing. Solar power is the way forward and for those who cannot afford to find Rs20,000 up-front money, the state should step in andd provide long-term financial assistance and drive this forward for the benefit for everyone. As more and more households adopt solar power generation for their domestic use, the cost of the pannels will begin to drop to a fraction of what it is now. I am certain the present CM of Tamilnadu is capable of injecting the stimulus required for state wide solar panel installation, if only it could be taken to her attention, and this is where newspapers like Hindu should play their part by writing editorials or feature pieces on this matter.
In Kannya Kumari dristrict alone almost 12 hours with out power irrespective of the day & night since last two months!!
Was this happening without the knowledge of the TN Govt and local administrators?
Kindly stop bluffing the people of TN. If you dont't, you become the biggest among them since you lead them!!
Whether it is DMK or AIADMK, there has never been any seriousness about the power situation. Because all the political nethas have arrangements in the form of separate cables or generators to take care of their personal needs. Why should they care about the common man ? Will the CM or any of her minions dare to come and stay in one of the millions of affected houses even for a day ?
My advice to Ms.Jayalalitha is to give her govt's green signal to Kundan Kulam Nuclear Plant operation without further waste of time and get a big applaud from top Scientists,Prime Minister,Former President, Majority of TN population(minus agitators at the first instance)and International Optimistic community. She can declare her noble decision through Television address from her office appealing agitators that their interests shall be duly protected. As usual in India, agitators too will applaud the decision six months later.
The government should act tough and get the Kudankulam project started.
By the way it is false to claim that out side Chennai the power cut is
only for 2hours. It is 8 hours in many villages.
As eminently suggested here, one must adopt an 8 AMM to 5PM daylight culture. What we cannot achieve in 9 hours of daylight we can never achieve by being nocturnal animals. Learn from the Amishes! We must also redesign our life styles so that there is no wastage. Also we can make it easy to retrofit buildings with hand operated capstan driven lifts. In gyms we can pedal power back to the grid so the paunches of policemen, officials and defence personnel will vanish. We can hold a competition for the shortest time in which a beaautiful paunch vanishes. Civilization changes in and at play.
On a more quick and substantial note, pedal power has got the demonstrated ability to generate at 100W peak power per head, 2000 MW and would generate employment of 20 million people. It is a multi input multi output humane human enterprise, with singing while pedalling and enjoying video shows and generally educating oneself by the help of giant screens! And dosas and coffee at the intervals.
It is ridicules to say that now the urban and rural areas of Tamil Nadu is experiencing 2 hrs power cut, where as more than 8 hrs power cut takes places everyday,in addition to this there are number of short power cuts amounts to at least another 1 to 2 hrs.
You can't fool people like this, instead the Govt should come with the fact and should inform the people the problem they face in getting additional power and how they are going to get rid of the "BLACK OUT"in Tamil Nadu.
Please visit the website of Solarcooking.org, where the innovations,
usage, and saving done by individuals, industries, and the government
departments are elaborately accumulated and given to us. But we do not
have the mentality to adapt the millions and millions of Solar Energy
that is thrown at Indian subcontinent for the maximum number of days
in a year. Most devastating attitude is from the agitators of
Koodankulam project. None of the protesters have on solar energy
product in their houses. The entire population of Tamilnadu from CM,
bureaucrats, scientists, industrialists to ordinary layman has to think
this issue and minimize the power shortage problem.
I've already installed a 100W solar system that serves to light 2 CFLs and a tube for about 3 hours... cost me to INR20000 for the solar panels, solar charge controller, lead acid battery and inverter.. I wish people would do the same instead of power hoarding by normal inverter based backup which defeats the very purpose of power cuts.
What 1 hour/2 hours so far? Power cut in Coimbatore is 8 hours per day!
I recall Jayalalitha announcing to thunderous applause in the assembly upon assuming
office that unlike DMK, her Govt would ensure no power cuts. Yet she and her cabinet goes around talking about development in the state. AIADMK and
DMK regimes have reduced Tamil Nadu to nothing in the past 40 years. We need to create
a new progressive party consisting of educated people, business persons and NRIs to run
Tamil Nadu.
Are poes garden, gopalapuram, boat club all included in the power cut. how come they never have one? Are they not in chennai/tamilnadu/India???
Alas! Electrical Power has thrown TN into a political fix & darkness too! Thinking in both AIDMK & DMK camps appears that talking of Kndan Kulam power generation will be anti-people' which may give edge to others. Other power sources are not at all comparable to the stature of high capacity nuclear/Thermal plants. TN should instruct its Power Engineers to check all pump sets and small & medium industries to replace obsolete motors/equipment with latest energy efficient units so that a maximum of 10% saving is effected. No need to mention all homes should use CFL lamps only to help themselves and the state.
The State may think of buying power from Kerala where at present it is surplus and the power shutdown is not found in that state.
Great news...till now we have more than 8 hours power cut here in madurai.
There are places where there are power cuts for 8 hours a day(In Kanyakumari District) at present. Does the new decision mean 16 hours of powercut?!?! This really seem to be a bias by the Government between rural and urban areas. Children would face the major impact, especially those who take up the public examination. When everyone in India has equal rights for everything, why not the benefit of using power?
This is really outrageous. What was the government of Tamil Nadu doing
from the past 6 months?
The government needs to provide an immediate solution for this almost
'perennial' problem. The CM must facilitate the immediate working of
the Koodankulam power plant at any cost, and other power generation
works must be expeditiously speeded up. Also environment friendly
promises must be made, i.e rather giving fans, mixies, grinders, the
govt could do well to give Solar Panels to everyone, which will help
in reducing the power shortages in Tamil Nadu.
For god's sake, lets get Kudankulam up and running!
This is time that parents should buy hand lamp i.e emergency chargeable lamp to avoid hazards to children from dragging towards fire mishaps especially during exam times
and make use of day time
