Rural Affairs Editor of The Hindu P. Sainath received the first Sri N.R. Chendur Jagati award here on Wednesday.
The award was instituted by Malati Chendur and family to honour the editor of the magazine ‘Jagati', who spent over five decades towards its growth.
On the occasion, friends and family members of N.R.Chendur recalled his simplicity, humility and grasp of knowledge of various subjects. Musicologist Pappu Venugopala Rao referred to Chendur as a “karma yogi” – a person committed to his work, irrespective of the titles and recognition he gets.
Accepting the award, Mr. Sainath said: “I take great honour in getting this award as N.R. Chendur is a giant in journalism to have run a magazine for so many years and also because Chennai is my hometown.”

This is yet another recognition of Mr.P.Sainath's contribution to rural development process in India. I still recollect his excellent articles on Odisha such as, if my memory of the titles are correct, Little Pani and Less Panchayat and Everybody Loves Good Drought
People like Sainath are a rare breed due to their honesty and commitment to the cause of truth and people.He deserves more and we wish him more success and awards.
