The success of an art form lies in its ability to mould itself to reflect the society at a given point in time, Anita Sumanth, Judge, Madras High Court, said.
Speaking at the inauguration of 23rd NRI Music and Dance Festival 2017 organised by Hamsadhwani, she said, “A static art form is one that is not vibrant and will eventually become out of context. Dynamism is the order of the day and always has been. When I refer to dynamism, I don’t refer to change in integral values. I refer to structural and conceptual modifications that are necessary to keep the art form in sync with social changes without which the art form might be in danger.” She noted how Hamsadhwani has been providing a platform for many artistes coming from across the world to perform.
Strong bond
Robert G Burgess, Consul-General, Consulate General of U.S, said that music, dance and art contribute much richness to life and great joy comes from experiencing them. "We have so many Indians living there and it speaks of the strong ties between India and the U.S. We have major festivals there for carnatic music in places, including Cleveland. When we study and learn about music, it eventually becomes a life-long passion,” he noted.
R. Sundar, secretary of Hamsadhwani, said the Ramachandran Award of Excellence will be presented this year to Kalakshetra. The award was instituted in the memory of R. Ramachandran (fondly known as RRC), the founder secretary of Hamsadhwani.
The event was followed by a performance by Parvathi Ravi Ghantasala. The winners of music competitions in various categories were also given prizes.
