A gang of four robbers armed with knives attacked inmates of a house in Muthialpet here on Wednesday and decamped with a large amount of cash and gold jewellery, police sources said.

The suspects barged into the house of Govindaraj (54) on St. Xavier's Street around 7 a.m. and snatched gold jewellery from the women at knife-point. When Govindaraj's son Selvakumar offered resistance, one of the accused persons stabbed him causing a bleeding injury.

After forcing the family members into a room, the gang took cash from an almirah. Govindaraj, owner of bars in a few liquor shops owned by TASMAC had gone to attend a function in Thanjavur when the incident took place. Selvakumar was admitted to a private hospital where his condition was said to be stable.

Fingerprint experts and sniffer dogs inspected the scene of crime. “We have formed three special teams to investigate the case. It appears that some former employees of Govindaraj might have committed the robbery,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Flower Bazaar) N. Arivuselvam said.
