The Chennai District Election Office will start removing graffiti from private and public property ahead of the byelection to the R.K. Nagar Assembly Constituency.
Following the announcement of the byelection to the Assembly constituency by the Election Commission on Friday, Chennai District Election Officer D. Karthikeyan convened a meeting of officials from the police and revenue departments on Friday.
“Political parties will have to clear defacement of property. Chennai Corporation officials will start clearing all graffiti from walls in the constituency. Those responsible for defacing the property will be penalised,” said a senior official of the district election office.
No new projects
As the Model Code of Conduct came into force on Friday, Chennai District Election Office officials asked the civic officials concerned to not commence new civic infrastructure projects in the constituency.
Work on various civic projects, such as bridges, that has already started will be allowed to continue, officials said.
Work on the inclusion of names on the electoral rolls will be taken up following requests by residents in R.K. Nagar.
