Anna University is set to get between Rs. 50 crore and Rs. 75 crore in April from the University Grants Commission to develop its research capabilities.

The university is the 16th in the list of institutions selected by the UGC for the status of University with Potential for Excellence (UPE).

With this Tamil Nadu has become the only State to have three universities with UPE status – the other two being the University of Madras and Madurai Kamaraj University.

“It was chosen based on the research work taken up by the university. We have a happy index to find if research conducted by a university is beneficial to society. Anna University’s professors are working on creating an antibacteriogram which will help the community. The UPE status was given based on this work,” said UGC Vice Chairman H. Devaraj.

Prof. Devaraj announced this at the inauguration of the two-day international educators meet at the university. The aim of the meet is to take forward Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives of ‘Make in India’, Digital India and Skill India programme, he said.

The UGC had planned to invite 1,000 teachers of Indian origin from abroad to take forward the movement, he said.

The meet would have several sessions with university officials and representatives from Germany, Australia and France besides Central institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology – Madras and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research.
