: Alleging widespread violations of the model code of conduct during the recent Assembly polls in the State, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss has urged the Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi to take steps to amend the Representation of the People Act, 1951 incorporating some of his suggestions.

In a representation presented to Mr. Zaidi in Delhi on Monday, Mr. Anbumani pointed out that the Election Commission (EC) had no powers to disqualify candidates indulging in illegal activities such as bribing of voters.

“The EC should be given the powers to act like the Central Vigilance Commission, the Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax departments to disqualify candidates if money distribution was confirmed,” he said in the memorandum, a copy of which was released to the media here.
